Fexofenadine HCL– Antihistamine – Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient

Histamine [a protein molecule] is a part of the immune system of the human body. The production of histamine is stimulated [in the mast cells] when the body encounters any allergen like dust, pollen, etc. However, the same protein molecule can cause allergies related to eyes, nose, lungs, etc. Antihistamines are used to control the rate of histamine production and reduce the effects of allergies on the individual. Fexofenadine HCL is an active pharmaceutical ingredient that is widely used in the production of antihistamine drugs. Let’s learn more about Fexofenadine HCL and how it counters the overreactions of histamine.

Fexofenadine HCL

Fexofenadine HCL is categorized as a second generation antagonist of H1-receptor with peripheral and selective actions as a H1 antagonist. The allergy caused by histamine is due to its attachment to certain cell receptors, which in turn release allergic chemicals. Fexofenadine HCL blocks this action and does not allow the interaction of H1 receptors and histamine. The result is evidently the stoppage of release of allergic chemicals.

Advantages of the API

The most wonderful advantage of Fexofenadine HCL is that it does not act on the brain resulting in absolute “no drowsiness”. This is contrary to other antihistamines which work by entering the blood that goes into the brain.
Most of other antihistamines are involved in the blockage of potassium that helps in cardiac cell re-polarization. Whereas, this API does not have the cardio-toxic nature making it incapable of blocking the potassium channel. Further, it does not have blocking effects to alpha1-adrenergic, beta-adrenergic receptors.

Fexofenadine HCL is used to make antihistamine drugs that are available in capsular form and tablets [most used]. It is used to treat conditions like allergic nose inflammation, hives, runny nose, allergic conjunctivitis, etc. The absorption rate is very low; hence it is suggested to use this with water and before taking any food.

The drugs produced with Fexofenadine HCL are not recommended for ingestion with any kind of juices. Please consult a doctor to understand the compatibility of the active ingredient during various stages and conditions of life.
